The first volume of the bibliography brings together foreign language publications published up to 1710, including the first known written works by authors related to Estonia, Livonian publications that reached European universities, and descriptions of the Livonian War and its continuation wars. In the 1630s, Estonia established its own printing houses in Tartu, Tallinn, and Narva, but works by local authors were also published elsewhere. The early years of the Northern War are characterized by a large proportion of state orders in printed production, while works with other content were published less and less. The records of the publications are supplemented by their availability in memory institutions in Estonia and other countries and the location of a known digital copy. The year 1710 marks the transition of Estonia and Livonia under Russian tsarist rule.
