One of the most interesting personalities of interwar Lithuania, Ernestas Galvanauskas (1882–1967) was the Prime Minister of four Lithuanian governments in 1919–1924, the Minister of Foreign Affairs in three Cabinets of Ministers, and in order to achieve de jure recognition of the Republic of Lithuania, he also held other ministerial positions. Party leaders considered his candidacy for the post of president three times. Galvanauskas contributed to the creation of the foundations of the Lithuanian economy, financial management and the introduction of the litas, helped organize the defeat of the Bermontites, and the annexation of the Klaipeda region to the Republic of Lithuania.
