The book is about Bulgarian revolutionary Peter Bonev (1837-1876). Based in the southern town of Perushtitsa, Bonev was one of the leaders of the 1876 April Uprising which precipitated the process leading up to Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman Turkish rule two years later. He was influenced by the founder of the organized Bulgarian revolutionary movement, Georgi S. Rakovski, and worked with the Apostle of Liberty, Vassil Levski. As a teacher in Perushtitsa, Bonev inspired some of the most valiant freedom-fighters who took part in the April Uprising. He founded a "rebels' republic" and motivated the heroes who committed mass family suicides during a church siege in Perushtitsa, one of the most tragic episodes of the uprising.
