This book is dedicated to the history of the Anglo-Russian confrontation in Central Asia, known as the "Great Game." Drawing on a wide range of sources—official documents, research, magazine and newspaper articles—the author examines the process of territorial demarcation and the political, military, and socio-cultural aspects of the rivalry between the two empires in the 19th century. The book features a host of prominent figures, including Ya. Vitkevich, Ch. Valikhanov, L.G. Kornilov, P.P. Semenov-Tyan-Shansky, and N.M. Przhevalsky. A significant portion of the publication is devoted to Orenburg as the center of Russian intelligence in Central Asia in the 19th century.
