A social revolution took place in Poland in 1939-1956. Cruel, brutal, imposed from the outside, but still a revolution. This revolution plowed the fabric of Polish society extremely deeply, creating conditions for today's expansion of the middle class, i.e. the bourgeoisie, to perhaps the most profound change in the mentality of Poles in centuries: a departure from the mentality defined by the countryside and the farm to the one determined by the city and urban way of life. This revolution, however, remains absent from public awareness.
