Edward Gierek (1913-2001) was a Polish Communist politician and de facto leader of Poland between 1970 and 1980. The golden decade of Gierek was a time when the society felt the improvement of living conditions in Poland. Shops were better stocked and salaries increased. This stabilization did not last long, however. After a few years, the apparent prosperity turned into economic problems that the rulers were unable to deal with.
