Library catalogs are the most important information systems that libraries build. Until the advent of information technology, they were the only tool that revealed the wealth stored in library holdings. The present study for the first time traces the overall development of the tools for creating library and information systems in Bulgaria - standards, rules for bibliographic description, classification tables and formats for machine-readable records. Their essence, as well as their application in library practice, are comprehensively presented. The monograph examines the processes of building the catalogs of the University Library "St. Kliment Ohridski" - one of the leading Bulgarian libraries, which actively participates in the development of the tools and their implementation in its practice, driven by the desire to be an example for other Bulgarian libraries.
