The monograph is the first attempt in Ukrainian literary studies to investigate the old Ukrainian bestiary as a system of animal symbols and their functional role in the literature of the IXth - XVIIIth centuries. It deals with the genesis of the old Ukrainian bestiary - archetype, myth, symbol and emblem. The author tries to consider the system of bestiary images. Every type, symbolical meanings and functional roles in different cultural and historical ages are thoroughly analyzed.
