Situated at the crossroads of the Volga River in its north-south flow and the Trans-Eurasian steppe corridor from China to Central Europe, the Samara region has been a transit area since ancient times. Mongolian troops passed through it to conquer Volga Bulgaria and Russian principalities. The Zhiguli Mountains saw Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Ivan Kalita and other princes on their way to the Khan's headquarters and back. Tsars and princes, diplomats and warriors, servicemen and freemen, famous and unknown - all of them once followed in transit along the Great Volga Route or the steppe corridor.
