The convention is the first legally binding multilateral treaty, the goal of which is to eliminate an entire category of WMD within a set period of time. The Convention was opened for signature in January 1993 and entered into force in April 1997.
The convention prohibits the member states from developing, producing, acquiring, stockpiling, maintaining, transferring or using chemical weapons.
