This work provides a comparative historical and ethnographical analysis of kinship terms nomenclature of the Northern Kyrgyz and Chuvash Republics. A short history of Kyrgyz and Chuvash ethnic development in the early Turkic period and a more detailed description of kinship terms in the two languages belonging to different branches of the Turkic language group are given. The analysis of the kinship systems allows to observe their common features. Besides, an important theoretical conclusion is made about presence in the Early Turkic period of the institution of marriage and kinship ''torkun-kelinun'', that can be traced back to the ancient Turkic maternal family, and nowadays survived only in some Eastern-Turkic peoples, the Kyrgyzs in particular, in the word, term of kinship ''torkun''.
