The first in Ukrainian source studies attempt of revealing complex demographic, political and cultural issues connected with colonization of the modern Donetsk region in the XVI-XVIIIth centuries. Documents from national and regional archives of Russian Federation and Ukraine are considered. Special attention is paid to urban development of the territories and to changes in economic influence of the cities. The work includes copies of the most interesting documents, some of which are being introduced into the scientific use for the first time.
