The Church of St. Nicholas on Lipno is the only architectural monument of the 13th century that has preserved a significant part of the original ensemble of murals. It was from this temple that the revival of stone construction in Veliky Novgorod began, a field of more than half a century of silence caused by the difficult political situation in the conditions of wars and the Mongol invasion. In 1941-1944, the church was seriously damaged, sharing the sad fate of other prominent Novgorod monuments that found themselves in the line of fire. In the 1950s, the building was restored, but the painting reached a deplorable state and for some time its existence was forgotten. A new appeal to the Lipno temple and its frescoes, undertaken today in parallel with the restoration begun in 2018, allows you to get a more complete picture of the original ideological concept and general artistic structure of this ensemble.
