The scientific monograph Marko Jesensek: Chapters on the Variants of the Slovenian Language is the twelfth independent book by the top, today undoubtedly the best expert on the history of the Slovenian literary language and its regional variants. It is a book of discussions and articles on the dual development of the Slovenian language. It comprises eighteen chapters in five sections: (1) Slovenian literary variants and the unification of the literary norm, (2) Carniolan literary language, (3) Prekmurje literary language, (4) East Styrian provincial literary variant and (5) Unified Slovenian literary language. It focuses on the question of the normativity and dialect of the Slovenian language, which had two literary variants until the mid-19th century. The main scientific finding of the monograph is that literary Prekmurje was formed in the same way as literary Carniolan, namely as a side achievement of Slovenian Protestantism.
