This book contains the memoirs of Fyodor Gavrilovich Kashmensky (1857–1932), a Russian teacher and member of the All-Russian Local Council of 1917–1918, written at the end of his life. His narrative covers the period from early childhood to 1895.
The chronicle continues with the memoirs of his son, Dr. Vadim Fyodorovich Kashmensky (1892–1961), extending the family story to the beginning of World War I. Additional documents from the family archive bring the narrative into the present.
Together, the memoirs provide vivid and expansive portraits of provincial Russian life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, along with the development of public education in southern Russia.
