Kemalist propaganda in Bulgaria during the interwar period, particularly as regards the exodus of the Turkish population from Bulgaria during the 1930s, is still insufficiently known today in its essence. The migration of Bulgarian Turks from Bulgaria to Turkey in those years was the first such process since Bulgaria gained its independence from the Ottoman Empire. It was planned and controlled politically by both countries on the basis of a bilateral agreement. The complex and insurmountable problems in Sofia's diplomatic relations with Ankara were the most important reason for it.
