The book by Alexander Rabinovich, an eminent American historian, continues his earlier researches on Bolsheviks and the October revolution in Petrograd. The present book is based on information from the Russian archives declassified in the 1990s. The author tries to find answers to the fundamental questions of the Russian history of the XXth century about the reasons for the Bolshevik party rebirth and democracy reduction of the Soviets, as well as other revolutionary organs, which led to formation of the authoritarian system. He also paints a persuasive and many-sided picture of life in Petrograd during the first year of the Soviet epoch.
