The book by a well-known Saint Petersburg Orientalist based on a vast number of archive sources analyzes the principal stages in the development of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara cult. It is for the first time that a number of significant and extremely important monuments of Buddhist religious thought are presented in Russian. The edition presents a unique set of motifs and symbols known as Mahayana mythology and shows the close connection between the Buddhist cult and archaic forms of religious life.
