Jan Cietek-Smrek is known primarily as a poet. However, journalism formed the center of his work and personal life. He spent more than a third of his life in the editorial profession, and the poetic pseudonym, often mentioned only in the initials js., s-k si-k we can find under hundreds of editorials, beseeters, reports, causeries, reflections and feuilletons. He was an internal editor of the Slovensky Dennik and Narodne Noviny newspapers, the responsible editor and later also the owner and publisher of the magazine Elan.
