Mladen Jergovic's portraits show faces from close-up, in extreme close-up, and yet they are unusually informal. A careless presence, not acknowledging the presence of the camera is something that sets them apart from the kind of portraits we expect and are used to. We look at portraits of people in passing, intimate worlds in passing. In the public space, unaware or just faced with the fact that the camera is watching them, and possibly recording them, people wear their intimate, special and relaxed face, on which the worlds they inhabit can be sensed, and sometimes read, in varying degrees. Only after they become aware that they are being watched, do they put on their face for the public, for the photograph, for eternity, more in line with their perception of themselves. When the gaze is directed at the camera in the photographs, that moment is recorded, a thousandth before the curtain was drawn, before the transformation. Sitting with a camera, often with white coffee and lemonade, Jergovic harmonizes the pace of his breathing with the inexplicable vibration of narrowed coordinates that sometimes ring in the focal point, or edge, of his field of vision and then transposes it into a portrait with a quick reaction. This is how a branched and multi-layered world of spiritualized and diverse personalities, powerful and enigmatic charisms is created. Faced with these portraits, we read them with the tools at our disposal, learned in the conditions of our experience.
