What connects Luka Modric, Miroslav Skora, Tomislav Spicek, Boris Dezulovic, Ella Dvornik and Alemka Markotic? The fact that they are public figures? This very thing – “being famous” – viewed as a process, strategy and goal, but also as a label and fate, is recognized in this book as their common denominator, something that articulates celebrity culture in the Croatian way. Regardless of whether this “fame” is acquired or granted, whether it is long-term or short-lived, as long as the media are involved, as long as there is an interested audience and as long as this type of capital can be converted into economic capital, it is a very important determinant of social and cultural life in Croatia. For this reason, this study is an attempt at cultural-anthropological insight into domestic celebrity culture. It is dedicated to different, yet related phenomena, built on textual analyses, discursive analysis and case studies. The book Being Famous: Celebrity Culture in the Croatian Way raises more questions than it offers answers, but in this way it also seeks to promote a new, hitherto insufficiently researched area in our country, and to arouse further (scientific) interest in it.
