The book presents a detailed overview of the evolution of the Dagestani society from the Middle Ages to the present time on the example of a highland rural community. Chokh is an aul in Gunibsky district, situated on the mountain slope. It is one of the oldest in Dagestan. The study is based on extensive source base, including a variety of documents from private and public archives, memoirs, family legends, local folklore. All of the historical events described in the book are refer to speaking and song folklore on the chokh dialect of the Avar language and are supplemented with commentary and translation. The edition contains more than 300 unique photographs, most of which are published for the first time.
