The book centers on a communicative boom started at the turn of the XIX-XXth centuries, which has been seriously transforming culture. All groups and layers of the society have been turned into audience by mass media, which has led to a shift in the relations between elitist and amateur audience: the elitist (permanent) audience is an active subject of the arts history and creator of cultural values, while amateur (casual) audience is passive, and its preferences are outside the historically established cultural values. The author suggests studying audience in the context of psychology of the masses.
