Ustafa Kemal Ataturk was not a well-known leader worldwide when he started the national resistance movement in Anatolia in 1919. However, the government's efforts to create and protect Ataturk's public image turned him into an almost superhuman figure in the eyes of many. Cinema played an important role in creating and disseminating this image and contributed to Ataturk's project of building a modern nation-state. In contrast, there is almost no research analyzing Ataturk's images in films and the effects of these images on the political and cultural life of early Republican Turkey. Ataturk on the Big Screen reveals the important, yet paradoxical role of cinema in this period by unearthing images of Ataturk in various film archives that have not been examined before. While Enis Dinc emphasizes the importance of cinema in presenting the modern image of Ataturk and the new Turkey to the world, he also reveals that this media tool carries some risks.
