The American air raid on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 1945, which occurred as a result of a navigational error (the bombers of the 8th Air Force were targeting the Dresden marshalling yard), was the first real confrontation with the consequences of aerial warfare for the inhabitants of Prague. The outcome of this unplanned action, which lasted about three minutes, was very tragic, as with a few exceptions, only residential and public buildings were hit, and people did not follow air raid protection instructions. In the first part, the author summarizes the results of current research on this topic and, among other things, points to some established narratives related to this event. The second part contains stories and memories of people connected to specific affected locations. The main sources used were letters, diaries, memoirs, interviews, regional literature, and collections from the Memory of Nations and Prague 2 City District Office. This is accompanied by a rich collection of photographs and, last but not least, a list of known victims.
