The book presents the history of the Dagestani village of Argvani from the Middle Ages to the present day. Based on materials from private and local history collections, as well as state archives, the history of Mountain Dagestan is traced through the fate of a single rural community up to the beginning of Soviet modernization, which transformed it into a Soviet collective farm community.
The book provides a detailed account of the Caucasian Wars of the 19th century — one of the key themes in the cultural memory of modern Dagestan and the entire North Caucasus — as well as the period of the Civil War, the Sovietization of the region, and its de-Islamization. It also presents the biographies of Argvani alims, along with the scholarly legacy and biography of the prominent modern linguist Abdulatip Shamkhalov.
