The book combines the public reaction to the staging of Chekhov’s plays at Moscow and provincial Russian theaters at the turn of the XIXth-XXth centuries. Volume 1 reveals a theatrical fate of Chekhov’s plays inter vivos, the chronicle of his relations with native theater and critics, as well as the history of perception of Chekhov’s drama by readers and viewers of that time. Volume 2 reconstructs little-studied plays of Chekhov in the first decades of the XXth century. The comments to the articles are based on unpublished and well-known documents: memories, diary notes and letters.
