The monograph offers the first reconstruction of one of the important elements of Vepsian traditional world views - mythological and religious fundamentals of the animal world. The reconstruction was made with the help of a multidisciplinary approach. Special emphasis in the study is on identification of the worshiped animals of the totemic, hunting and animal-farming groups. The ideas are considered in the multifaceted historical context and from socio-economic, ethnic-cultural, interethnic aspects. The body of sources is mainly composed of previously unknown archival documents as well as folklorist, ethnographic and linguistic texts collected by the author over 20 years of expeditions.
