The term Gorny Altai came into use in connection with the specific geological structure of the Altai Mountainous country. This is the name of a vast area of the north-eastern Altai, now a part of Russia, with its ancient Caledonian structure Wide stretches of land, valleys, commonly known as steppes, are the characteristic element in the relief of Gorny Altai. Among them are the Tenghin, Khan, Abai, Uimon, etc. The Kurai and Chuya steppes are among the highest. The archeological monuments of Gorny Altai are connected with the steppes and river valleys. Since ancient times people have settled in such places as steppes and rivervalleys which offer better living conditions. Significant events in the history of the Altai took place there.
