I'm a poet who began poetry without a master. My first poem, a metered rhyme, was published in 1936. But a year later, two of my friends and I embarked on a fundamental transformation of Turkish poetry, discarding traditional meter and rhyme forms, familiar similes, and metaphors. For a while, I wrote satires of society through irony, using the common man's spoken language. Two poems that demonstrate my emergence from this period are "Seed" and "Memory." My "Odysseus with Tied Arms," published in 1962, was interpreted by our critics as "obscure," a poem that doesn't easily convey its meaning. So, back then, no one considered that readers had become accustomed to easy poetry. Odysseus with Tied Arms is no longer considered strange today. There's no such thing as demanding obscurity for a poet. Similarly, one can't ask him to write a poem more clearly. Poetry is what it is, whether it's understood or not.
