The story of the Sumerian goddess of war and love Inanna, who descended into the underworld of the dead and returned to the world of the living after a few days, is one of the oldest myths of humanity, echoing in the sacred texts of Babylon, Greece and Christianity. Olga Tokarczuk tried to retell it twice – first in the novel Anna In in the Tombs of the World and later in the libretto for Aleksander Nowak’s opera Ahat ili. Siostra boga. She found in it a universal story about the Goddess and discovered that understanding it allows one to control the fear of death and thus achieve immortality. Olga Tokarczuk’s libretto is accompanied by an erudite, richly illustrated commentary by Zbigniew Mikolejko, explaining the journey of mythological motifs in time and space.
