In Latvia, the first year of the Soviet occupation, from June 17, 1940 to July 1, 1941, is often called the “terrible year”. During this year, the Cheka (The All-Russian Extraordinary Commission) arrested at least 3,745 Latvian citizens, but killed 400. This book is dedicated to what happened in Riga Central Prison on June 27–29, 1941, when the Soviet authorities extrajudicially murdered 99 Latvian residents. The repressive methods of the communist regime in the summer of 1941 were also cruel in other occupied countries: Lithuania, Estonia, as well as in the western parts of Ukraine and Belarus. After World War II, communist-occupied Latvia kept quiet about what had happened, fearing possible repression. The result of the enforced silence was dramatic – when the opportunity to speak freely began, myths and fabrications multiplied alongside true facts. Work on the book began in 2014 and took 10 years. It is not only a memorial to the murdered, but also an attempt to restore historical truth.
