"Blukanets" is a pre-death (2001-2004) memoir of the poet, translator and public figure Carlos Sherman (1934-2005), a summary of 12 years of experience as vice-president of the Belarusian PEN (1989-2001). Built as a diary of the author’s travels around the world, the book at the same time reflects Sherman’s entire life path, across eras and continents. Eastern Europe and Latin America are the geographical poles of the story. The personal in the book is closely intertwined with the public, "Marxist" style of writing is combined with observations of contemporary Sherman socio-political events in Belarus.
Carlos Sherman was born in Montevideo (Uruguay) to a Jewish family from Western Belarus, grew up in Buenos Aires (Argentina), and received a degree in philology from the Marian Moreno National Institute. Since 1956 he has been a resident of Soviet and then independent Belarus. He translated Spanish-language writers into Belarusian and Russian (first of all - Gabriel Garcia Marquez, into Spanish - Belarusian writers, including Vasily Bykov.
The book is published with the kind consent of Tamara Nikonova.
The book was published with the help of Svetlana Aleksievich, the Return Foundation, the Peter Krechevsky Belarusian Foundation and the European Union Delegation to Belarus.
