The book is about the phantasms haunting a lonely sailor's cabin after watch. It delves into the human condition and takes us on a dual journey: first, from the macrocosm to man, and second, from man to his own being in the flow of history. There is also a duality of viewpoints: one is the perspective of a learned observer and essayist, and the other is the contemplation of a fiction writer. Together, these two lines of observation create an epic of humanity. The author's pen name, Orkney, comes from the Orkney Islands off the northeastern coast of Scotland.
