The book is about the court trial against Bulgarian revolutionary Vasil Levski (1837-1873), which led to his hanging by the Ottoman Turkish authorities. It highlights the respect with which the Ottoman government treated "the chief rebel" and shows how the findings about his revolutionary activities caused alarm and anxiety about the internal security of what was still a vast and strong empire. The trial against Levski, who came to be revered as a saint, is discussed here from a purely legal perspective.
