This is a collection with Bulgarian folklore texts combined around the images of serpent and its close “relatives”: the female serpent and the lamia. As you will see from the pages of the book, the serpent is one of the key personalities in the Bulgarian folklore, an inheritor of ancient gods, powerful and dangerous opponent but in the same time honored as ruler of the natural elements, host of mountains and caves, patron of settlements and clans. The female serpent and the lamia take does not take such important place in folklore world of the Bulgarians and they are considered mainly as pests and enemies. The collection presents almost all genres of folklore verbalism: songs, tales, legends, oral stories, anecdotes, contemporary jokes, proverbs, riddles, oaths, and babies. There are also various fests, rituals and magical practices as well as believes connected with the image of the serpent, female serpent and the lamia.
