The monograph presents the author’s conception of correlation between language and speech. The author demonstrates a considerable blur of a frontier between the frames of linguistic and speech units. The idea of linguistic continuum is proposed as an alternative to the strict dichotomy “language-speech”. Criteria, factors, types and degree of stability of certain units of different levels in linguistic hierarchy are discovered. The research is based on the materials of the English language, also using some data from Russian and other languages.
