The book is a valuable source of information about the history of Zmeinogorsk, a town in Altai region. This collection is the first scientific publication, reflecting the history of Zmeinogorsk from ancient times till the beginning of the 20th century. The articles retrace and analyze in details the geological period of Zmeinogorsk ore basin, its archaeological past and pre-Russian stage of its history; the discovery of local silver deposit and its development to commercial level of production, the creation of the unique mining and smelting plant, social structure and management system; the decline of mining industry in the region and its leasing. All the articles are based on the authentic documents of the Central archival collection of Altai region and supplemented with extensive artwork and documentary material.
