A few years before being called up for military service, Aare Holm told the medical board that he would like to serve in the border guard - the effect of spending the summer in the border zone. He ended up in the Far East and the Navy, which meant three years of service instead of the usual two. Aare's place of service became the submarine destroyer "Tallinn".
