"Zakhar Berkut" (1882) is one of the most striking historical works in Ukrainian literature. It tells about the heroic confrontation of the inhabitants of the Carpathian village of Tukhlya to the Tatar-Mongol invaders. To recreate the historical situation, Franco used not only the annals, but also folklore; great in the story and the role of copyright fiction. No less important is the symbolic and mythological level of the work: the confrontation of life and death - the legendary giant Watchman, the keeper of the Tukhol basin, and the forces of the evil sorceress Morana. The central idea of the story is the unification of Ukrainian society for the sake of progress and resistance to enemies.
This story of the Ukrainian classic became the basis for the film adaptation. The directors of the film are Akhtem Seitablaev and John Wynn. Starring Robert Patrick, known for the movie Terminator 2.
