The book is based on an old legend about the Lamed-vavniks. According to the legend, every minute, in every generation in the world secretly live thirty-six righteous men (Lamed-Vav in Hebrew means “thirty-six”). They never make themselves known unless those who live near them appear to be in danger, and when the threat disappears, these people also disappear. And if any generation that lives on earth will be worthy, one of these thirty-six hidden righteous men will become the Messiah. The same legend inspired the French writer Andre Schwarz-Barts to create his famous novel “The Last of the Just”.
