Viktor Domontovych is the literary pseudonym of the Ukrainian writer, historian and archaeologist V. Petrov (1894—1969). "Doctor with a paradox", as Mykola Zerov called him, was a master of intellectual prose, and he was also a talented scholar, erudite and... Soviet intelligence officer. "Without soil" is Domontovych's best novel, a brilliant example of intellectual prose in which the author talking about the trip of a metropolitan art critic, a largely autobiographical character, to the city where he spent his childhood, writes about the tragic groundlessness when people lost touch with the earth, with nature, with the place of his birth and, finally, with God.
