In late 2020, Bulgaria blocked the start of EU membership negotiations with the Republic of North Macedonia, citing Skopje's failure to implement the 2017 Friendship Treaty with Sofia. The outstanding bilateral issues identified by Bulgaria include what it sees as falsification of historical facts, repression against people with Bulgarian self-awareness in the Republic of North Macedonia, and the nature of the official language of North Macedonia. Sofia's position on the language dispute, in particular, remains somewhat unclear to those who don't know much about Bulgarian history. The present analysis is intended to shed light on the matter.
