The offered reprint of the book "Work and Labor" (1899) by distinguished Russian military man, economist and political scientist Mikhail Anichkov starts with the words "The XIXth century put an end to slavery, the XXth is to put an end to war". The theme of war is in the focus of the author's study. Anichkov comes to the conclusion that the projects of international courts and ceremonial international acts ease the scourges of war but, per se, they don't bring the mankind closer to the termination of wars. Having tracing thoroughly the situation in military, political and economic international relations of the late XIXth century, the author shows those positive examples of economic policies that led many nations away from military conflicts.
