The monograph reconstructs the activities of Lithuanian theatres in the context of the Nazi colonization policy, describes the goals of Lithuanian cultural policy during the war. The monograph highlights not only the theatre processes that took place in theatres maintained by the state and municipalities, but also reveals a wide range of performing arts activities that were characteristic only of the war years, such as variety shows, šiupiniai, and front theatre. The study of theatre processes that took place during the war allows the current reader to better understand and assess the course of Lithuanian cultural and theatre processes during a complex period of transformation (two successive occupations), and to make assumptions about how Lithuanian culture would have developed if Lithuania had not survived the second Soviet occupation. The monograph presents in detail the theatre of the war years, which has not been studied so far.
