Drawing on archives, period literature, and memories of artists and ladies of the oldest profession, the author revives Bratislava's Vydrica, originally a district of Danube fishermen, boatmen and craftsmen, in which prostitutes settled in the 18th century and the alleys on the castle hill gradually became the center of extensive craft prostitution. The author faithfully records the elimination of prostitution in Bratislava after 1948. It was followed by the elimination of Vydrica as part of Bratislava's Podhradie [extramural settlement]. Although Vydrica belongs irretrievably to the past, the genius loci of this place still remains a living part of Bratislava's history. In period photographs, postcards and works of art, only a nostalgic memory of this romantic corner of the city has been preserved.
