Creative association "Square" was organized in Vitebsk in 1987 as the spiritual successor UNOVIS (a short-lived but influential group of artists, founded and led by Kazimir Malevich in the Vitebsk Art School in 1919). The main idea of association was an organized opposition to the official art and adoption of the aesthetic principles of the classical avant-garde and postmodernism in the artistic life of the country. The "Kvadrat" included 10 artists of different styles and different kinds of art (arts and crafts, sculpture, drawing, painting); A. Malei, A. Slepov, A. Dosuzhev, V. Chukin, V. Shilko, T. and IU. Rudenko (up to 1990), N. Dundin, V. Mikhailovskii (until 1990), V. Schastnyi.
