The book discourses upon a particular trend in the early European film theory but at the same time does not provide the complete review of European cinematographic thought. The author of the monograph M.Iampolskii turned to the old cinematograph of the 10s-20s of the XXth century, prior to the montage of motion pictures (France, Germany and Austria) in order to present it as a source, an example for the overcoming of the crisis of the present-day Russian cinematographic thought.
