The edition presents a collection of Benois’ pictures devoted to Versailles. Contemporaries called Alexander Benois “artist of Versailles” and saw certain predestination in his passion because the artist had French roots. Most of the pictures from the Versailles cycles of 1897-1898 and 1905-1906 that are now stored in the State Russian Museum previously belonged to in private collections of St. Petersburg patrons and art lovers - Mary Tenisheva, Alexander Korovin, Sergei Botkin, as well as artists’ friends – an art historian Theodore Notgafta, a director of the Russian Museum and Hermitage Dmitry Tolstoy and a composer Alexander Taneyev.
