The present work is the first in Ukraine integrated research devoted to the life and activity of Simon Petlura, a famous military and political leader of the self-declared Ukrainian People Republic (1918-1924). The modern visions on Simon Petlura's participation in the national liberation struggle against the White Guard forces and the Bolsheviks are suggested on the basis of historical literature, memoirs, periodical press of the time. The usage of a wide range of previously unknown archival documents allows to interpret the most controversial facts.
